WAU is the Watershed Administrative Unit (WAU) coverage for Washington State at 1:24,000 currently used for watershed analysis. WAU boundaries were established under WAC 222-22-020. The WAU boundaries cover the whole state and represent the boundaries of 845 watersheds. The boundaries are mainly along drainage divides (ridges), with some along rivers and other Washington State Department of Natural Resources (DNR) management boundaries. In the forested areas of the state, the WAUs range in size from 3,822 to 297,614 acres with a mean of 40,187 acres and a standard deviation of 26,697 acres. The WAU boundaries are much larger on the Columbia Plateau where the WAUs range in size from 35,097 to 1,765,473 acres. WAU's are used by the Timber/Fish/Wildlife cooperators as the boundaries for watershed analysis studies and other natural resources management purposes on state and privately owned lands.
This version of the WAU boundaries is current as of May 2000.
This is a hierarchical coverage comprised of Water Resource Inventory Areas (WRIA), Basin and Watershed Analysis Unit (WAU) boundaries. Water Resource Inventory Areas (WRIAs) are the largest unit, BASINs are subunits of WRIAs, and WAUs are subunits of BASINs. The WRIA coverage was compiled by the Department of Ecology at a scale of 1:24,000; additional WRIABASIN arcs and WAU arcs were digitized at 1:24,000 scale by DNR Forest Practices Division.
Please note: The Washington Department of Ecology has jurisdiction over WRIA boundaries. Official WRIA boundaries may be obtained from the Washington Department of Ecology. (See their web site for more information, <http://www.ecy.wa.gov/services/gis/data/data.htm>.)
<purpose>WAU's are used by the DNR for watershed analysis and other natural resources management purposes on state and privately owned lands. The goal WAU size is 10,000 to 50,000 acres.</purpose>

<horizpar>This is a hierarchical coverage comprised of Water Resource Inventory Areas (WRIA), Basin and Watershed Analysis Unit (WAU) boundaries.
The WRIA's were originally subdivided into Basins by digitizing at a scale of 1:250,000; and these basins were later subdivided into WAU's by digitizing at 1:100,000. Wria, Basin, and WAU lines were refined to 1:24,000 as stated above in 1998 and 2000.</horizpar>

<procdesc>PROCESSING PROCEDURES: Ridge lines and hydrologic basins delineated and digitized from USGS 7.5' quadrangles by DNR Forest Practices Division personnel. Watershed analysis staff delineated correct hydrologic basin boundaries.
PROCESSING TOLERANCES: Fuzzy = .581; Dangle = 0; Weed = 40; Grain = 40; Snap = 40; Nodesnap = 20; Edit = 100
HISTORY OF CHANGES TO DATA SET: Original data set compilation was completed in 1993. Water Resource Inventory Areas (WRIA) boundaries were compiled by Information Technology Division staff at 1:24,000 scale. Additional Basins subdividing WRIAs were digitized at a scale of 1:250,000 by DNR Forest Practices personnel. Additional Watershed Administrative Units (WAU) were digitized at a scale of 1:100,000 by DNR Regional personnel. Subsequently, WAU boundaries were updated at a scale of 1:24,000 when a watershed analysis was initiated.
Most recently, WA DNR Forest Practices watershed analysis scientists, lead by Matt Brunengo, have delineated all remaining WAU boundaries to 1:24,000 scale. These boundaries were digitized by DNR Forest Practices cartographers, lead by Liz Thompson and Tom Boyd. In 2000, new WRIA boundaries, completed by the Department of Ecology, at 1:24,000 scale were incorporated into the coverage.</procdesc>
